SPECIALIST IN EDUCATION DEGREE (Ed.S.)
TEACHING AND LEARNING: MUSIC EDUCATION
Application Checklist

  1. Obtain complete information, including admission requirements and how to apply online, from the following sources. Because applications are self-managed, it is essential that you follow all instructions explicitly. Observe all published deadlines and application fees.

       School of Music website (www.music.gsu.edu)
          (Prospective Students/Graduate Information)

       College of Education website
          Degrees and Programs
             (http://education.gsu.edu/main/deg_prog.htm)

       Prospective Students/Admissions
             (http://education.gsu.edu/oaa/prospective.htm)

       Georgia State University Graduate Catalog
          Registrar's Office
             (http://www.gsu.edu/es/office_of_the_registrar.html)

  2. A master's degree in music education (or master's degree with certification in music) is generally required. Individuals who hold a master's degree in another field (e.g., music performance; early childhood education) may be able to earn the Ed.S. in Music Education by completing additional graduate-level courses in music education. Individuals who do not hold a master's degree in music education should consult the head of music education or the Associate Director of the School of Music individually for advice (all addresses available on the School of Music directory). Include a copy of your most recent teaching certificate with your application package. If you do not have a master's-level teaching certificate, please contact the music education division directly prior to applying for the Ed.S. program.

  3. A minimum of three years of fully certified teaching experience in a K-12 public or private school is generally required. Individuals having alternative teaching experience may consult individually with the School of Music (see #2, above).

  4. The Ed.S. is not appropriate for individuals seeking initial teaching licensure in music in the state of Georgia. Individuals seeking initial certification should consult directly with the music education division of the School of Music.

  5. Applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test (Verbal and Quantitative subtests only -- 900 minimum combined verbal and quantitative scores). In place of the GRE, applicants may take the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). A minimum MAT of 48 is required. Because test scores must be forwarded directly from testing agencies, applicants should complete these tests as early as possible.
GRE: GRE, Educational Testing Service, CN 6004, Princeton, NJ 08541-6004
MAT: Miller Anaolgies Test, The Psychological Corporation, 555 Academic Court, San Antonio TX 78204

  6. With your application, submit a current copy of your vitae, including all education and professional teaching experience.

  7. Be certain to include a 300-500 word statement of professional goals. In addition, applicants are urged to include a sample of graduate-level writing, such as a portion of a master's thesis or a graduate research paper.

  8. Applicants should submit a DVD or VHS video tape of a 30-minute segment (or two 15-minute segments from different lessons) of classroom teaching. The video should clearly demonstrate teaching-learning process that engages students in both verbal and musical interaction. Recording should be done in such a way that both teacher and students are visible. The tape will be used only by the faculty for application review and will remain confidential. Label the video with your name, address, and phone number, and indicate APPLICATION VIDEO FOR Ed.S. PROGRAM IN MUSIC EDUCATION. Include a lesson plan for the video and a brief description of the students and the particular class(es) being taught. Also include verification that you have submitted your Ed.S. application package to the College of Education, with the date of submission clearly indicated.

Do not include the video with your application packet to the College of Education. Send or deliver the video to:
