MASTER OF MUSIC AND NON-DEGREE
Application Checklist

Application to the master's and non-degree graduate programs in the School of Music involves submission of materials both to the Graduate Office of the College or Arts and Sciences and to the School of Music. Applicants should follow instructions carefully regarding submission of materials and completion of application files. This checklist will assist applicants in meeting requirements in a timely fashion.

  • Carefully read all materials regarding the program(s) in which you are interested, the application instructions and required materials. Send all application materials to the correct offices.
  • Complete the graduate application to the College of Arts and Sciences. Follow all instructions explicitly. To ensure prompt processing, submit your application materials and request all additional items, such as recommendations and transcripts, well before the application deadline. Check with your references to be sure they have sent your recommendation. Be sure that your requests for transcripts and recommendations indicate the date by which materials must be received by Georgia State University. No application will be reviewed until all application materials are complete. Applications that are incomplete at the deadline date will be deferred for consideration until another semester.
  • Indicate on the application forms the intended semester of entry and the program and concentration to which you are applying. Note that if you are admitted for a given semester and decide not to attend, you must update your application for a new semester by contacting the graduate office of the College of Arts & Sciences and the Admissions & Enrollment Office of the School of Music.
  • Request original transcripts from all institutions of higher education from which you ever received any credits (including college-level courses taken during high school). These must be sent directly to the Georgia State University office indicated in the packet.
  • Request at least two letters of professional recommendation from individuals familiar with your educational background and qualifications. Originals of these letters should be sent directly to the School of Music Admissions & Enrollment Office, Georgia State University, PO Box 4097, Atlanta, GA, 30302-4097. No file will be reviewed until these letters are received.
  • Non-degree applicants must indicate courses they expect to take under non-degree status. Non-degree teacher certification applicants should list 3-4 graduate courses (7000-level and higher) directly related to music education (see on-line university catalog and non-degree certification information for more details).
  • If your program requires an audition, consult the audition requirements page for details. Indicate your anticipated audition date on the Application Request Form. Download and send the hard copy to the Admissions and Enrollment Office of the School of Music at least 4 weeks prior to the audition date. You may also call the Admissions and Enrollment Office directly at (404) 413-5955 regarding an audition date. ( be sure to send the form at least 4 weeks prior to the audition date ). Note: If a School of Music audition day follows the application deadline, the applicant should plan to audition no later than the following audition day closest to the application deadline. Recorded auditions (Tape, CD, DVD) will be considered on a case-by-case basis only for students residing at distances greater than 300 miles from the School of Music. An in-person audition is strongly recommended.
  • Consult the School of Music Admissions & Enrollment office if you are unable to audition on one of the School's standard audition dates. Requests for individual audition appointment dates are handled on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of applied music faculty.
  • Follow instructions of your program regarding submission of videotapes, audiotapes, scores, or other supplementary materials required as part of your application. Send these materials directly to the School of Music. If materials are shipped by any means other than U.S. Mail (UPS, Federal Express, etc.), use the following address: Georgia State University, School of Music Admissions & Enrollment Office, 75 Poplar Street, Room 522, Atlanta, GA 30303. Materials become part of the application packet and generally are not returned. Label all materials clearly with the date, your name/address, and the program for which you are applying.
  • If your program requires GRE or MAT test scores (composition and music education MM degrees only), be sure to have scores submitted as part of your application package to the College of Arts & Sciences. Scores must be received prior to the application deadline.
