Part One: "Warm-up"
Back to the Routine Index
Do some easy stretching and some slow deep breaths ,before starting
your Routine. You'll be glad you did. The mind and body respond
to easy, deep breathing......and a good tone is dependent upon
it.
If you are not familiar with the Alexander Technique, I
cannot stress strongly enough how beneficial it can be for trombonists!
It can very literally transform your life, not simply your
trombone playing. Getting with a professional teacher is the
best way to employ the technique in your daily life, but much
good can be gained from some diligent research and study on your
own.
Volumes have been written about the
physiology of breathing
as it relates to brass playing. Most of these volumes I've read.
To be certain, much good information is out there. I might also
emphasize that most problems I correct as a teacher of trombone
involve a misconception or misapplication of proper breathing.
In addition, most hurdles encountered in performance can be traced
to improper breathing and/or blowing.....including performance
anxiety.
By far the most meaningful and coherent
explanation of "proper" breathing was given to us by
the nearly-divine Arnold Jacobs.
His concepts of "Song and Wind" together with the idea
that we "breathe to expand" (and not vice-versa) are
worthy of lengthy and intense contemplation by every serious
player.
You want to strive for airFLOW through
a relaxed throat.
Like a free-flowing stream of water............

For this
part of the Routine, I alternate between two different exercises:
Descending Triads and
my own version of the World's
Best Warm-Up.
Which ever you choose, we should
tune before going on.......
