Johnny Mercer Centennial Celebration at Georgia State University: Centennial Celebration Conference, Film Screening, and Concert, November 13-14 In recognition of the centennial of Johnny Mercer's birth, Georgia State University Library's Popular Music and Culture Archives, which houses the Johnny Mercer Collections, in collaboration with the Rialto Center for the Arts and the School of Music, is presenting a Centennial Celebration to highlight the music and life of one of America's greatest songwriters. Centennial events will be held at the Rialto Center for the Arts and include the Popular Music in the Mercer Era, 1910-1970 Academic Conference on November 13-14, the Atlanta premiere of the documentary film Johnny Mercer: The Dream's On Me on November 13, and the Johnny Mercer Centennial Celebration Concert featuring Lizz Wright, Joe Gransden, and musicians from the School of Music on November 14. For nearly five decades, Johnny Mercer had a prolific career as a lyricist, composer, and performer. He is credited with writing 1,700 songs, was nominated for 18 Academy Awards, and was one of the founders of Capitol Records. Presented in partnership with the Georgia State University Library and School of Music with support from the Johnny Mercer Foundation.
